“How much per acre?” is the first question almost everyone asks about forestry mulching. The honest answer is that two acres right next to each other can price very differently. Here are the seven things that actually set the cost — and how to get an accurate quote quickly.
How forestry mulching is usually priced
Contractors typically quote one of two ways: per acre (a fixed price for a defined area) or per hour / per day of machine time. Per-acre pricing gives you certainty; hourly pricing can make sense for selective jobs where the scope is hard to define. Either way, the factors below determine how long the machine will be working.
1. Vegetation density
Light brush and scattered saplings mulch quickly. A solid wall of cedar or yaupon you can’t walk through takes far longer per acre. Density is usually the single biggest factor.
2. Tree size
Mulching time rises quickly with trunk diameter. Brush and saplings are fast; larger trees take much longer to grind and may be better felled first or left in place.
3. Species
Some wood is harder to grind than others. Dense hardwoods and thorny, multi-stemmed brush like mesquite take more work than softer species.
4. Terrain and ground conditions
Flat, firm ground is fastest. Steep slopes, rocks, creek banks, gullies and soft wet clay all slow the machine down and add wear to teeth and tracks.
5. Access
Can a truck and trailer get close to the work area? Are there gates, bridges or creek crossings? Easy access means more time clearing and less time traveling across the property.
6. Selectivity
Clearing everything in a defined area is quickest. Saving dozens of individual trees, working tight around structures, or meeting a park-like finish takes more care and time.
7. Project size and travel
Larger projects spread mobilization (hauling the machines to your site) over more acres, so the cost per acre often drops as the project grows. Very small jobs may have a minimum charge.
How to get an accurate quote fast
- Send the property address or a map pin
- Estimate the acreage you want cleared (a satellite outline is perfect)
- Take photos looking into the brush at eye level, plus any access points
- Tell us which trees to keep and what you want the land to become
With that, we can usually give you upfront pricing quickly. Request your free quote.
